Clearing the Air: How Ayurvedic Nasya Oil & Facial MLD Bring Ease to the Head and Neck

Seasonal shifts, dry desert air, indoor air conditioning, daily stress, and tension held quietly in the jaw and shoulders all tend to land in the same place: the head, neck, and sinuses. This area can feel congested and tight, affecting how we breathe, sleep, and move through the day.

At Desert Bodywork, I offer a specialized focus that pairs Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) of the face and neck with Nasya, the traditional Ayurvedic practice of applying herbalized oil to the nasal passages. It joins ancient self-care wisdom with gentle, targeted bodywork to help you reset in any season.

The Tradition of Nasya
In Ayurveda, Nasya is the application of herbalized oil to the nasal passages. The nose is regarded as the doorway to the head and a passage for prana, or vital energy. Traditionally, keeping the nasal passages lubricated is valued for supporting mental clarity and comfort in dry or irritating environments, which makes it especially fitting for the desert.

When life feels ungrounded, fast-paced, or overstimulating, Nasya offers a quiet, grounding ritual. Many people find it soothing for the sinuses and a welcome calm for a busy mind.

How Facial and Neck MLD Works
While Nasya addresses the nasal passages, Manual Lymphatic Drainage works externally with the lymphatic system, the body's network for moving fluid. The face and neck hold many superficial lymph nodes. When stress, fatigue, or environmental factors slow lymphatic flow, you may notice puffiness, a feeling of sinus fullness, and tension around the jaw, temples, and neck.

MLD uses light, rhythmic strokes designed to encourage the natural movement of fluid. It is very gentle and deeply soothing, and many clients find it eases the body into relaxation.

Why I Pair Them
Together, these practices complement one another. Clients often notice:

  • Sinus comfort: a sense of easier, more open breathing

  • A softer upper body: less tension in the neck, base of the skull, and jaw, where many of us unknowingly hold stress

  • A quieter mind: slow, rhythmic touch invites deep relaxation

  • Nourishment: a welcome counterbalance to the drying effects of travel, air conditioning, and desert air

Experience the Shift
Whether you are seeking relief from sinus tension or simply a dedicated moment to pause and reset, focused head and neck work is a lovely addition to your routine. This work is available as a standalone 30-minute session or can be incorporated into a 60- or 90-minute session. Call or text me at 760.895.0680, or request a booking through my online calendar.

I come to you at home, at the office, or at a private retreat, and I have limited studio availability at Salon 119.

This work complements, and does not replace, medical care. Please share your health history with me before your session, and check with your healthcare provider about any persistent sinus symptoms.

Desert Bodywork
How I found my way here

I grew up close to the natural world, spending my childhood outdoors, with animals, under the night sky. That connection to something quiet and unhurried never left me. But for a long time, I lived inside a body that didn’t feel like a safe place to be.

I was 24, working in corporate accounting, when I received my first massage. I still remember the feeling: a kind of peace I had never known in my own body. A sense of arriving somewhere I hadn’t realized I’d been trying to reach. The therapist looked at me afterward and said, ‘You’re going to do this one day.’ I thought she was wrong.

A few years later, the company I worked for closed. I received a severance package and, without fully understanding why, I enrolled in massage school. That decision changed the entire course of my life.

More than two decades later, I’ve trained in over 18 modalities, from structural integration and craniosacral therapy to lymphatic drainage, Ayurvedic bodywork, Reiki, and breathwork. But the thread connecting all of it is the same: I believe every body deserves to feel at home in itself. That belief is the foundation of every session I offer.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me outdoors close to the desert landscape that drew me to the Coachella Valley and keeps me grounded in it. I’m a lifelong student of natural living, and the quieter practices that bring the nervous system home.

I chose mobile, concierge bodywork because I believe healing shouldn’t require effort to access. You’ve already done the hard work of showing up in your life. Let me come to you.
